 Das auffälligste Merkmal des menschlichen Auges ist die farbige, strukturierte Regenbogenhaut, die sogenannte Iris.
Die Entwicklung der Iris beginnt schon im 3. Monat der Schwangerschaft. Bis zum 8. Monat ist sie vollkommen ausgebildet und verändert sich noch leicht (Pigmentation) bis zu einem Jahr nach Geburt.
Somit ist ein Irismuster einzigartig und es erlaubt somit eine eindeutige Identifikation einer Person unter vielen. Selbst bei eineiigen Zwillingen unterscheidet sich die Iris.
Der nächste grosse Vorteil der Iriserkennung ist, dass sie völlig kontaktlos abläuft. D.h. Sie müssen nur kurz in eine Kamera sehen und schon sind sie identifiziert.
Die Iriserkennung läuft folgendermassen ab: Die Iris und Umfeld wird vom System im Infrarot-Spektrum gescannt (damit der User nicht geblendet wird), Isolation der Iris vom Rest des Bildes, digitale Umwandlung (2024 Bit) der Muster der Iris, bitweiser Vergleich der Daten mit vorhandenen Daten in der Datenbank.
